The Volcano House located in the Hawaii Volcanoes
National Park and was my next stop in Hawaii for two nights.
The Volcano House is the only hotel inside the National
Park and sits on the edge of the Kilauea Crater.
You will find many hiking trails located within a few steps
of the hotel and the visitor center for the park is nearby.
The rooms are very basic with a small bathroom, a few
lamps to light the room, and a rocking chair.
The rooms facing the parking lot can be noisy and I
suggest a Crater Rim View.
The restaurants in the Volcano House can be expensive
and the Volcano Village(about a mile down the road)
offers a number of affordable choices such as the Lava
Rock Cafe and the Thai Thai restaurant for dinner.
The weather can be cool and rainy at this high elevation
of over 4,000 feet and a light coat is suggested.
Crater Rim drive will take you around the Kilauea Crater
and some highlights include the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory
and Jagger Museum, Halemaumau Crater, and the Thurston
Lava Tube.
The Chain of Craters road will take you down to the current
lava flow and you will find many hiking trails and lava flows from
the past.
You will have to park you car and walk down the road about
half a mile to the current lava flow.
The lava flows have ended the road at this point and you will
need to bring plenty of water, and a good pair of shoes with
thick soles.
You might see big clouds of steam from the lava flowing
into the ocean, a nice reward for the end of the Chain
of Craters Road.

The U.S. Census Bureau and the Department of Housing and Urban Development have released New Residential Construction statistics for July 2010. Housing Starts data estimates how much new residential real estate construction occurred in the previous month. New construction means digging has begun. Adding rooms or renovating old ones does not count, the builder must be constructing a new home (can be on old foundation if re-building). Although the report offers up single family housing, 2-4 unit housing, and 5 unit and above housing data, single family housing is by far the most important as it accounts for 70-80% of total home building. We have yet to perform a thorough analysis on loan pricing this week. Now seems like a good time… Day over day, on average, rebate is 11.9bps better vs. rate sheets issued yesterday (after AM reprices). The majority of pricing improvements were passed along in the lower note rates, specifically those securitized into 4.0 MBS coupons. Yay bull flattener. Right now two lenders are going in the opposite direction as the other three majors. Those two lenders are better on a week over week basis and have both made 4.25% more "do-able" for well-qualified consumers. Borrowing costs are generally 0.125 to 0.25% higher at the other three pigs. I should mention those three lenders were priced super aggressive last Friday and are still priced super aggressive today, just not as super as last…(read more)

"Rate sheet influential" MBS coupon prices rallied higher today as the yield curve continued to flatten. The October delivery FNCL 4.0 finished the session +05 at 102-16 and the October delivery FNCL 4.5 was bid +02 at 104-07. The September delivery "phantom" 3.50 MBS coupon went out +8/32 at 100-20. The secondary market current coupon is trading below 3.50% on the street but I've got it marked at 3.628% because I still focus my weighting on the 4.0 coupon. These price appreciations were not a factor of local buying as much as bids/offers being updated as the yield curve flattened. MBS trading volume was above average but activity was slow in general with only about $2 billion of new production on screens.
