Notes from the Volcano House
The Volcano House located in the Hawaii Volcanoes
National Park and was my next stop in Hawaii for two nights.
The Volcano House is the only hotel inside the National
Park and sits on the edge of the Kilauea Crater.
You will find many hiking trails located within a few steps
of the hotel and the visitor center for the park is nearby.
The rooms are very basic with a small bathroom, a few
lamps to light the room, and a rocking chair.
The rooms facing the parking lot can be noisy and I
suggest a Crater Rim View.
The restaurants in the Volcano House can be expensive
and the Volcano Village(about a mile down the road)
offers a number of affordable choices such as the Lava
Rock Cafe and the Thai Thai restaurant for dinner.
The weather can be cool and rainy at this high elevation
of over 4,000 feet and a light coat is suggested.
Crater Rim drive will take you around the Kilauea Crater
and some highlights include the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory
and Jagger Museum, Halemaumau Crater, and the Thurston
Lava Tube.
The Chain of Craters road will take you down to the current
lava flow and you will find many hiking trails and lava flows from
the past.
You will have to park you car and walk down the road about
half a mile to the current lava flow.
The lava flows have ended the road at this point and you will
need to bring plenty of water, and a good pair of shoes with
thick soles.
You might see big clouds of steam from the lava flowing
into the ocean, a nice reward for the end of the Chain
of Craters Road.

Cook Islands - Magical Tranquility
Are you looking for a South Pacific paradise

Aitutaki is considered one of the most beautiful islands
In the Pacific and offers a large lagoon with a number of
uninhabited coral island (Motus).
The Are Tamanu Beach Village is located on a white sandy
beach with beautiful sunsets.
The Village offers 22 rooms with thatched roofs, a restaurant,
and complimentary kayak, canoes, and snorkeling gear.

The old colonial towns of
Guadalajara, Guanajuato, and
San Miguel de Allende offer a
different experience then the
beach resort towns that have made
Mexico famous.
You will find cobblestone streets,
ornate cathedrals, pastel buildings,
parks and plazas with flowering
gardens and colorful fiestas that
look and feel just as the Spanish
left them over two hundred years
ago.
Guadalajara is Mexicos colonial
capitial and the home of the Mexican
hat dance and the world famous
Mariachi bands.
The towns historical center is
dominated by the colonial cathedral and
you will find many cultural sights such
as the Degollado Theatre, the Rotonda
de los Hombres Ilustres and the
Cabanas Cultural Institute.
You will find a number of choices for
Hotels and the Quinta Real is considered
the best hotel in Guadalajara.
The Quinta Real is a boutique hotel with
stuccoed ceilings, periods furniture, and
impressive art.
The hotel is an all-suite property with marble
bathrooms, and Jacuzzi baths in the higher
end suites.

Guanajuato is one of the most important
historical and cultural colonial cities of
Mexico.
The Spanish built the citys churches and
public buildings with fortunes made from
the worlds richest silver mine, the Valenciana.
The Quinta Las Acacias is a small luxury hotel
that was built in a former French-style mansion
and located at the base of a mountain.
The hotel suites are uniquely decorated with
historical influences with some rooms in a
European style and some with a Mexican
design.

San Miguel de Allende was founded in 1542
and retains it colonial charm with its cobblestone
streets and Spanish colonial mansions.
The Casa de Sierra Nevada is a small hotel
located in a colonial mansion surrounded by

decorated with art and antiques.
